Millennials (born 1980-2004), are you tired of “millennial" being used as a dirty word broadly implying negative stereotypes to the largest generation in the US? Have you been searching for a guide made for millennials that’s not about “fixing” anything?
Millennial Maxims will…
●Challenge common stereotypes used to marginalize millennials and help you take action to use your strengths.
●Change the way you define your career and give you practical tools and guidance on professionalism, dress, and work relationships.
●Discuss the reality of the cost of college education, how to decide if it’s right for you, and alternatives to the traditional educational path.
●Give you practical financial advice that takes into account the student loan debt you already have.
●Discuss social media “best practices” to guide you to meaningful connections and interactions while building your image as a professional.
●Give you tools to set goals that are worthwhile and strategies to make them happen so you can start living life on your terms.

This book was a quick and easy read that gave some great tips on everyday issues facing millennials (relationships, work/life balance, finances, etc.). The author kept her points short and manageable which was a nice difference from a lot of other self-help books that promise to "make you a better you in 53 steps!" Yeah, right!Where I thought this book lacked a bit was in statistics and references to back up the author's points. She seems to have had a lot of life experiences relevant to the millennial generation, but a couple of her points seemed more like personal opinion rather than evidence-based suggestions. For example, her point on buying property as a millennial - I completely agree with her assessment that we as millennials don't need the biggest and best right away as we start our careers, however, suggesting that readers should not buy and instead rent doesn't seem like the most sound advice. Many factors play into a decision like that, and in some areas where property values are increasing exponentially, it may be wise to purchase now, as property value increases could price a millennial out of the market within a few years. Not to mention the equity put into a house - when student loans are paid off there is little to show for it, other than personal pride and cost-avoidance of future interest.
Overall - good, quick read. Would recommend for the younger subset of millennials who are getting started in their careers or college and looking for some recommendations on basic topics that affect all millennials.

Millennial Maxims Guiding Principles for Unlocking Your Goals and Living Life on Your Terms edition by Jeni Burckart Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
The author outlines at the beginning that the book is based in her own personal experiences and anecdotes. She does a great job weaving her own experiences throughout the book. I particularly liked the candid nature with which she described her experiences working with your significant other...and how to deal if the relationship does not work out. Overall a quick read with a lot of valuable information and action items for each chapter!
My husband and I read this on the beach in Jamaica. We are embarking on entrepreneurship as we both see ourselves as millennials and it was great to read about how to channel our thoughts and proceed with style and grace. This was a great guide and filled in the spots that were missing in other areas we'd read about in becoming an entrepreneur and also explained the inner drive that we have to become successful.
A great read for #millennials of all backgrounds and personalities. The book is outlined in chapters that are stand-alone topics, allowing the reader to pick and choose what is most pertinent to them. Overall, it is a quick read for those "young professionals" who are looking to advance in their career, reflect on life goals or learn how to save/budget and "get ahead" through smart money management.
A few of my favorite quotes from the book
"The interactions we have with other human beings really create our value here on Earth."
"If you can delay gratification and sacrifice some during the early years of your career to lay a solid financial foundation, you'll be able to live an even higher quality of life later on. This of course needs to be balanced with the fact that it's just money and you can't take it with you."
“Millennial Maxims” is a well written book that explains some of the common issues millennials face currently and provides a refreshing perspective on how to overcome these issues. With poise the author gets straight to the point and clearly states that her advice is not based on factual information but based on experience. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because it was entertaining, encouraging, and cheerful. I also admire the author’s audacity to provide detailed examples of how she faced problems in her life.
It was very eye opening to read some of the categories millennials have been placed under such as the selection under “generation me” and “trophies for everything”. Being a millennial, I strongly believe that these stereotypes may pertain to individuals but not our generation as a whole. I have met a lot of millennials who are the most selfless people in the world. I really loved her advice on further education, finances and fashion. I found them very helpful because I am a millennial who is teetering between further education and joining the work force.
This is a great book and I highly recommend it to all millennials and anyone else trying to understand some of the problems millennials face today!
