A tale of New York City nostalgia mixed with murder, conspiracy, and sex, Manhattan Affair portrays a world of secrets and lies which entwine the lives of three former New England college classmates Jed Chase, Steve Cahill, and Morris Bergman. Jed Chase is good-looking and easy-going, and has a secure job. He’s lived a charmed, upper middle class and anchored life; that is until he falls for Katherine Cahill, a seductive and dangerous beauty whose dark secrets threaten to destroy Jed’s dreams, his career, ultimately his life. Katherine is married to financial tycoon Steve Cahill who has secrets of his own he and his business partner, Arthur Barrett are suspected not only working for the U.S. government but also laundering money from them. Katherine seduces Jed into helping her plot Cahill’s murder in order to acquire his tens of millions of dollars. It is when Katherine’s plan unravels that the story weaves its yarn and no one is who they seem. In an attempt to preserve his freedom, Jed delves into the secret world of Katherine and Steve Cahill and discovers a world of sex, espionage and lies. Helped by his buddy, Mickey Thompson and his former college roommate and now his lawyer Morris Bergman, Jed begins to piece the real story behind the story one frame at a time. All while under the watchful eye of both the NYPD and the CIA; Jed struggles to discover the real truth while fighting for his life. In the tradition of Pete Hamill meets John Grisham, Jack Sussek has crafted an exciting first novel, rich in New York City detail and ambience, that showcases the power of human goodness and how both greed and love, in its many forms, can drive people to commit unthinkable crimes of passion. Manhattan Affair spellbinds us with the author's thoughtful and convincing nostalgia for his city and the thoroughly unsuspecting but dramatic twists and turns that sex, betrayal, and conspiracy take Jed Chase through. "A smart, thrilling medley of twisted relationships, unrequited love and closely guarded secrets. A wickedly suspenseful thriller." - Kirkus Reviews www.manhattanaffair.com

In this world of instant gratification, Jack Sussek goes old school in telling this story of Jed Chase, connoisseur of all things New York. This thriller, destined to be a film, not only excels in the telling of an original story, but paints a living backdrop of New York that reveals the author's true love of a great city. Each scene is skillfully constructed with delicious details of the smells and the sounds of pre-9/11 Gotham. Throughout the book, the reader is fed a steady diet of believable dialogue, descriptions so real I nearly tasted every cigarette smoked, and an ongoing trail of literary teases that inevitably lead to a satisfying end of a tale well-told. A fine debut opus by Sussek, whetting this reader's appetite for his next story.

How much trouble can one New York guy get into? This book kept me wondering and shaking my head...and not putting the book down. At the close of each chapter, it was impossible not to continue to immediately follow the course of the story in the next chapter. Set in Manhattan in the early 1990's, the author really knows the city, knows the love of neighborhoods and the neighborhood haunts, and writes with humor and passion about how one guy navigates a steady, normal course in life until a beautiful woman leads him WAY off course.
If you want to write a page-turner, you need constant action and a convoluted plot that keeps the reader in the dark...until you want him to see the light. That's what Jack Sussek, first time novelist, has done, while forcing you to worry almost from page one for his naive and vulnerable, but immensely likable narrator. You can read many of today's thrillers and feel "been there, done that," but you won't recognize Manhattan Affair. Its plot is too clever. P.S., you'll end up wanting to try every bar and restaurant he describes,
All the good things one wants in a mystery; intrigue, love, sex, murder. A real page turner that takes you to many of Manhatan's watering holes. If you love New York, read it. If you are not a New Yorker, read it!!
I bought this book to read during a trip to New York City, but unfortunately I stopped reading it after a few pages. It's pretty amateurishly done. An editor would have helped--and it is sorely in need of a proofreader. If you're big on noir, you might enjoy it despite the issues that discouraged me.
So I stayed up past midnight last night finishing this book and I felt compelled this morning to post a comment. I often hear of books described as a "gripping yarn" - and it may sound hackneyed -- but that is what A Manhattan Affair is the twisted threads of the lives of a half dozen New Yorkers and the consequences (intended and otherwise) their desires have on one another. Sex, money, Wall Street, black ops, greed, unrequited love, privilege, trust and the fickleness of justice set in New York; what's not to like?

Others here have commented on the page turning plot twists. (Go read the book for yourself to learn what they are, I'm not going to spoil the surprises!) I can safely share that my favorite part of the narrative are Jed's sardonic observations of New York/New Yorkers. If you were in New York in the 90's you'll recall the restaurants (some now regrettably closed) and reminisce about life in the city just at the dawn of the internet age. No Google. No Facebook. No s. No cellphones. No texts. It made me miss the days when people smoked cigarettes when they drank booze and one actually needed go to the newsstand at the subway stop and buy a newspaper to find out what was going on.

All in all, good stuff. Tightly written and deftly crafted. Aptly titled as the city itself is omnipresent, unforgiving and survives. I loved it. Looking for more by this author.
I was surprised by how good this book is. I read and finished it in two days and I haven't done that in a dog's age. What is incredible about it and possibly the only book I've ever read that does this it changes genre as you read the book. It starts out Hemingwayesque with very descriptive and colorful imagery to set the scene but with some noir to make it interesting, ie the way it starts with a flawed hero telling the story in flashback. Then it turns into an erotic thriller with exotic and graphic sex scenes that make Basic Instinct seem tame. I know Basic Instinct is a movie but it's the best comparison I can think of because I don't read too many erotically charged novels. By the end it has become a spy thriller which leaves you wanting more from Jed Chase. It also has beautiful and vivid images in Mr. Sussek's descriptions. It seems as if it were a love poem to the City of New York where it is set. Many, if not all, of the bars and restaurants mentioned are real places. At least one of them I have eaten in. It has twists and turns that I didn't see coming and I am very clever at figuring out plots of books and movies quickly. Every time I thought this or that would happen, it zig zagged into a place I didn't expect. The one critical thing I have to say is Mr. Sussek does ten to be a bit redundant in his descriptions where the main female character is concerned and in my humble opinion, Chapter 17 could have been left out of the book altogether with the main idea of the chapter placed in one paragraph at the end of Chapter 16 or the beginning of Chapter 18. I also love the fact that I believe I share many of the same ideas, thoughts, and feelings of Jed Chase to the point that this is exactly the kind of novel I always wanted to write but don't seem to have the talent that Jack Sussek has. Overall, I love, love, love this book! It is unique, attractive (I would so want to be friends with Jed Chase), imaginative and so very interesting; a real page turner I couldn't put down. I was so excited by the quality of this book I would really love to turn it into a screenplay which I have always wanted to do but never have as yet. I just never found a source material that I liked so much that felt like I feel and felt that I could relate to. Get this book, you will not regret it. I can't wait to see what Jack Sussek has up his sleeve next.
